What llms.txt is
llms.txt is a proposed standard for a plain Markdown file at the root of a website, such as example.com/llms.txt. It gives AI tools a short map of the pages that matter, so an agent or assistant pointed at your site can find the right pages without crawling menus and cookie banners.
It is not a ranking signal. Google has said its AI features work from the normal search index, and no AI search engine has said it uses llms.txt to choose citations. The llms.txt guide explains when the file is worth the time.
How the generator builds your draft
- It opens your home page and reads the site name and meta description for the heading and summary.
- It looks for a sitemap in robots.txt, then at /sitemap.xml. With no sitemap, it uses the links on your home page.
- It skips tag, category, login, cart and search pages, then picks up to 20 pages, shallow ones first and a few from each section.
- It reads each page's title and meta description, leaves out pages marked noindex, and groups the rest under one heading per section. Blog, news, legal and careers pages go under Optional.
Before you upload it
- Rewrite the summary in plain words: what the site or product is, and who it is for.
- Check the page list. Add the pages you would send a new customer, such as pricing, setup and the main docs, and remove anything that is out of date.
- Replace any marketing-style notes with one factual line about what each page covers.
- Save it as llms.txt at the root of your domain, served as plain text, then open it in a browser to check the links.
Limits of the free generator
- It lists at most 20 pages and reads at most three child sitemaps from a sitemap index.
- Pages that only load their title with JavaScript, or that block unknown crawlers, may be left out.
- It does not write llms-full.txt, the optional companion file with the full text of your docs.
- Results are cached for 24 hours per domain.

Common questions
Where do I put llms.txt?
At the root of your domain, so it opens at yoursite.com/llms.txt. Serve it as plain text, the same way as robots.txt.
Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?
No. robots.txt tells crawlers what they may fetch. llms.txt suggests which pages are worth reading. It cannot allow or block anything.
Will llms.txt improve my rankings or AI citations?
Not on its own. It helps agents and assistants find your key pages when they visit your site. Being cited depends on the pages themselves and on what other sites say about you.
Why are some of my pages missing from the draft?
The generator lists at most 20 pages, skips archive and account pages, and leaves out pages that are marked noindex, redirect elsewhere or did not answer in time. Add any page you need by hand.
Is the llms.txt generator free?
Yes, with no account. It only reads your public pages, so it does not use paid data.
