Perplexity SEO: how to get cited by Perplexity

How Perplexity picks the sources it cites, what to change so your pages get chosen, and how to track your brand's citations.

By Denis Veisllari

Perplexity searches the web for every question, reads a few pages and cites them by number in its answer. To get cited, your page has to be reachable by Perplexity's crawler, rank well enough to be found for the question, and state the answer clearly near the top. Then track a fixed set of questions over time to see whether it is working, because one answer tells you little.

Perplexity shows its sources more openly than most AI tools, which makes it a good place to see what works. For the general method across all engines, read what GEO is. For ChatGPT specifically, see how to track your brand in ChatGPT.

How Perplexity chooses sources

Every answer starts with a web search. Perplexity takes the question, runs one or more searches, picks a handful of pages and writes a summary with numbered citations. That means:

  • Pages that rank for the question get read first. Normal search visibility is the entry ticket.
  • Pages it cannot fetch are skipped. Blocked crawlers, login walls and content only rendered by JavaScript all count against you.
  • Pages that answer plainly get quoted. A clear sentence that answers the question is easy to lift and cite.

Step 1: let Perplexity read your site

Check robots.txt and any firewall or bot protection rules. PerplexityBot is the crawler Perplexity uses to find pages for its answers. If it is blocked, your pages cannot be cited from fresh crawls. Also check that the main text of key pages is in the HTML your server sends, not only added by scripts after load.

Step 2: find the questions that matter

Write 15 to 30 questions a buyer asks before choosing a product like yours:

  • "Best [category] for [audience]"
  • "[Your brand] vs [competitor]"
  • "Alternatives to [competitor]"
  • "How do I [job your product does]?"

Ask each one in Perplexity and note which pages it cites. Those cited pages are your real competition for that question, and they are often review sites, lists and forums rather than your direct competitors' homepages.

Step 3: make your pages easy to cite

DoWhy
Answer the question in the first paragraphThe opening is what gets quoted
Use the question's own wording in a headingHelps the page match the search Perplexity runs
Keep prices, features and dates currentOld facts get passed over for newer sources
Add comparison and "alternatives" pagesThese match the buying questions that cite lists
Show who wrote it and whenMakes the page easier to trust as a source

Structured data is not on the list. Perplexity has not said it uses markup to pick sources; schema markup for AI covers what it does and does not do.

Step 4: get onto the pages Perplexity already cites

For many buying questions Perplexity cites third-party lists and reviews. If a cited list names your competitors but not you, contact the author with what is missing and why it helps their readers. Fix wrong facts about you on any cited page. This is often faster than getting a new page of your own to rank. The AEO guide has a one-week plan for finding and pitching these pages.

Step 5: track Perplexity answers over time

Answers change between runs, so check the same questions on a schedule and look at the trend. In zaDojo:

  1. Create a project and add your brand and competitors to the project context. Answers are matched against those names and domains.
  2. Open Prompt Tracking and paste your questions.
  3. Add Perplexity to the engines (ChatGPT and Gemini are selected by default; Google AI Overviews and Claude are also available).
  4. Pick the country and language, check the cost preview, and choose a schedule.

Tracking records whether each answer names your brand, links your site, which competitors appear and which pages are cited. To try one question first, Prompt Explorer can show Perplexity's answer next to ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. The AI visibility tool page shows what each tracking view looks like.

On cost: Perplexity has no consumer-app collection in zaDojo, so every Perplexity check runs through its API and costs more per answer than a scheduled ChatGPT or Gemini check. The tracker shows an estimate before any check runs. Current prices are in the AI visibility docs. If you work in an AI agent, connect the zaDojo MCP server and ask it to show the cost before it schedules anything.

What you cannot measure

  • How many people ask a question in Perplexity. Perplexity does not publish it.
  • A fixed position. The order of citations shifts between runs. How often you are cited is the useful number.
  • Signed-in, personalised answers. Trackers measure the default answer.
  • API versus app differences. Tracking uses Perplexity's API, which can differ from what someone sees in the Perplexity app.

Questions people ask

Does Perplexity use Google results? Perplexity does not fully disclose its search sources. It runs its own crawler and search, so pages that rank well in traditional search and are open to PerplexityBot have the best chance.

How fast can I get cited? Getting added to a page Perplexity already cites can change answers within days. A new page of your own takes about as long as getting it to rank.

Is Perplexity SEO different from SEO for ChatGPT? The work is mostly the same: be crawlable, rank, answer clearly, appear on the pages that get cited. The differences are the crawler names and which sources each engine favours, which is why you track them separately. See GEO vs SEO vs AEO.
