What is AEO? Answer engine optimization explained
What is AEO? Answer engine optimization gets your brand named and cited in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews. AEO vs SEO, and how to start.
AEO (answer engine optimization) is the work of getting your brand named, recommended and linked in the answers that AI tools write. The "answer engines" are ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Microsoft Copilot and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. When someone asks one of them "what is the best accounting software for freelancers", AEO decides whether your product is in the answer.
Put simply, SEO earns your page a place in a list of links, and AEO earns your brand a mention inside the answer that now sits above that list or replaces it. You measure AEO by how often answers name you, not by a ranking position.
The term is older than ChatGPT. It started with featured snippets and voice assistants, and today it mostly means AI answers. That makes it almost the same job as generative engine optimization (GEO), the name researchers and many marketers prefer. GEO vs SEO vs AEO compares the three side by side.
AEO vs SEO: what changes
AEO builds on SEO, but four things change:
- The win is a mention, not a click. A buyer can read your name in an answer and never visit your site. A page can also rank first and still lose the buyer if the answer names a competitor.
- Other people's pages count more. For "best X for Y" questions, answer engines lean on review sites, lists, forums and comparison pages. Being named there can matter more than your own site.
- There are no positions and no volumes. You are in the answer or you are not, and nobody outside the AI companies knows how often a question is asked.
- Answers move between runs. The same question can name different brands an hour later or in another engine, so one check is a sample, not a result.
What stays the same: engines that search the web mostly read pages that already rank in Google or Bing. A page nobody can find in search rarely gets cited, so AEO sits on top of normal SEO, not in place of it.
How an answer engine picks what to say
Most answer engines search the web before they answer. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews run one or more searches, read a handful of pages, and write a summary. The answer usually links some of the pages it read.
That gives you two ways into an answer:
- Your own pages get read and cited. The engine found your page in its search and used it.
- Other pages name you. A review site, a "best tools" list, a Reddit thread or a comparison page mentions your brand, the engine reads that page, and your name ends up in the answer even if your site is never linked.
The second route matters more than most people expect. If your brand is missing from the third-party pages that keep getting cited, improving your own site will not fix it.
What to do this week
You can start AEO in about five working sessions, with no tools beyond a browser and a spreadsheet.
- Write 15 to 30 buying questions. List what a buyer asks before choosing a product like yours: recommendations ("best [category] for [audience]"), comparisons ("[you] vs [competitor]", "[competitor] alternatives") and problems your product solves. Skip questions about your own brand name for now.
- Record today's answers. Ask each question in ChatGPT and Gemini, in a logged-out or temporary chat. For each answer note whether your brand is named, whether your site is linked, which competitors appear and which pages are cited. Check the matching Google searches for an AI Overview too; the free AI Overview checker shows whether one appears and which sites it cites.
- Rank the cited pages. Put every cited URL in one list and count how often each appears. Split the list into your pages, competitors' pages and third-party pages. The few that keep coming back are your shortlist.
- Fix your own pages. Give each one a direct answer in the first paragraph, a comparison table with named products, and current prices and limits written as text. Check that
robots.txtdoes not block OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot, PerplexityBot or ClaudeBot unless you mean to; Google's AI Overviews read pages through the normal Googlebot. - Contact the third-party pages. For each cited list or review that names competitors but not you, write to the author with what is missing and why it helps their readers. Offer a trial or data, and correct outdated facts about you.
Then ask the same questions again every week. Schema markup and an llms.txt file are tidy extras, but no major answer engine has said it uses either to choose what to cite, so do them after the five steps above.
How to measure AEO
Track the same fixed questions on a schedule and look at these numbers per engine:
- Mention rate: the share of answers that name your brand.
- Citation rate: the share that link to your site.
- Share of voice: your mentions divided by all mentions of the brands you track. If 20 answers produce 40 brand mentions and 10 are yours, your share is 25%. Leave out questions that contain your brand name, because they always name you.
- Cited pages: which URLs the answers rely on, split into yours and third-party. This list tells you where to work next.
Traffic tells you less than you might hope. Some visits from ChatGPT show up in Google Analytics as referrals, but most answers that name you never produce a click. Search Console counts clicks from AI Overviews together with normal web results, with no separate filter. That is why AEO is measured on the answers themselves.
Treat a failed or empty check as unknown, not as "not mentioned". The step by step tracking method is in how to track your brand in ChatGPT, with engine-specific notes in Perplexity SEO and AI Overview optimization.
What AEO is not
- There is no "AI search volume". Nobody outside the AI companies knows how often a question is asked. Tools that show one are estimating from Google data. Pick questions by how close they are to a purchase, not by a volume number.
- There is no ranking position. An answer either names you, links you, or leaves you out. Track mention rate and citation rate per question and engine.
- Your normal SEO still counts. Engines that search the web mostly read pages that already rank. If your SEO basics are shaky, the SEO checklist is a better first step.
A worked example
Say you sell project management software for architects. You choose 20 questions, such as "best project management software for architecture firms" and "Monday vs Asana for architects".
- In week one you ask all 20 in ChatGPT and Gemini. Your brand is named in 3 of 40 answers, and two competitors are named in more than half.
- The citations show the same three pages again and again: an industry blog's list of tools for architects, a G2 category page and a competitor's comparison page.
- You contact the blog's author with a short, honest pitch and a free account, and you add a comparison table and current prices to your own "for architects" page.
- You keep asking the same 20 questions every week and watch whether your mention rate moves.
In zaDojo that tracking costs about €0.002 per question per engine on a scheduled check. Twenty questions on ChatGPT and Gemini each week is about 170 checks a month, roughly €0.35.
How to do this with zaDojo
zaDojo runs AEO from inside your AI agent or the web app:
- Prompt Research takes a keyword and returns questions people ask about it, ChatGPT's answer to each, and the sites those answers cite. About €0.25 per keyword. The questions come mostly from Google's "People also ask" data, so treat them as a starting list, not logged AI prompts. More on the AI prompt research page.
- Prompt Explorer asks one question right now in ChatGPT, and can compare Claude, Gemini and Perplexity side by side.
- Prompt Tracking asks your saved questions daily, weekly or monthly in ChatGPT and Gemini, with Google AI Overviews, Claude and Perplexity as options, and records who was mentioned and which pages were cited. See the AI visibility tool for what each view shows.
- The AI Visibility Audit skill reads those answers and cited pages and recommends a few concrete changes.
The plan is €10 a month with €10 of usage included, and a new account gets €0.10 of trial credits with no card. With the zaDojo MCP server connected, you can ask Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or Codex to "check how ChatGPT answers questions about my market" and it runs the research for you. The AI visibility docs list every tool and cost.
Questions people ask
What does AEO stand for? Answer engine optimization. An answer engine is any tool that replies with a written answer instead of a list of links, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews.
Is AEO replacing SEO? No. Answer engines lean on search results, and Google still sends most websites far more visitors than AI tools do. AEO is extra work on top of SEO, aimed at the questions where AI answers now sit between you and the buyer.
Is AEO the same as GEO? Close enough to treat as one job. AEO is the older name and once covered featured snippets and voice assistants; GEO was coined for AI-written answers. The work and the checklist are the same.
How long does AEO take to show results? Getting onto a page that is already cited can show up in answers within days, because the engines search the live web. Changes that depend on your own pages ranking better take as long as normal SEO.
Which engine should I start with? ChatGPT, because it has the most users. Add Gemini and Google AI Overviews next, since they reach Google's audience.
