Shopify meta descriptions and title tags

Where to edit meta descriptions and title tags in Shopify, what to write for products, collections and the home page, and how to update a whole catalog.

By Denis Veisllari

In Shopify you edit a page's title tag and meta description in the Search engine listing section at the bottom of each product, collection, page or blog post. If you leave them empty, Shopify uses the product title and the start of the description. That default is fine for small stores but weak for collections and best sellers, where a written title and description earn more clicks.

This guide shows where each field lives, what to write, and how to do it for hundreds of products at once. It is part of the SEO for Shopify guide, and titles and descriptions are a section of the Shopify SEO checklist.

Where to edit them

  • Products, collections, pages and blog posts: open the item in the admin, scroll to Search engine listing and click the edit icon. You can change the page title, meta description and URL handle.
  • Home page: Online Store > Preferences, under title and meta description.
  • Whole catalog: export products to CSV from Products > Export. The file has SEO Title and SEO Description columns. Edit them in a spreadsheet and import the file back. Test with a few products first.

Many themes add your store name to the end of every title tag (Blue Mug | Your Store). Check how your theme does it so you do not write the store name twice.

Title tags

The title tag is the blue headline in search results, and it matters for rankings. Google often shows about 50 to 60 characters before cutting it off. The free SERP simulator shows where your title would be cut.

  • Lead with what the page is, in the words buyers use. "Ceramic Coffee Mugs" beats "Mugs Collection".
  • Add the detail that separates you: material, use, size, or a brand people search for. "Linen Duvet Covers, Stonewashed, All Sizes".
  • One page, one target. If two collections have nearly the same title, they compete with each other.
  • Do not stuff keywords. "Mugs, Coffee Mugs, Cheap Mugs, Best Mugs" looks like spam and gets rewritten by Google.

Meta descriptions

The meta description is the grey text under the title. It does not affect rankings directly, but a clear one gets more clicks, and Google uses it when it matches the search. Google often shows around 150 to 160 characters.

Write it as a short reason to click:

  • Say what is on the page and who it is for. "Handmade stoneware mugs in 12 glazes, dishwasher safe."
  • Add one practical detail buyers care about: price range, free shipping threshold, returns, sizes in stock. Only if it is true and stays true.
  • Write for the page, not the store. The same description on every product is no better than none.

Google sometimes replaces your description with text from the page when it fits the search better. That is normal; it does not mean yours is wrong.

What to write for each page type

Collections

Collections usually target the biggest category searches, so give each important one a written title and description.

  • Title: Ceramic Coffee Mugs: Handmade in Portugal
  • Description: Shop 40 handmade ceramic mugs in 8 sizes, from espresso cups to 500 ml. Dishwasher and microwave safe. Free EU shipping over €40.

Products

For a large catalog, start with best sellers and products that already get impressions in Search Console. For the rest, the default of product title plus description is acceptable if your product titles and opening sentences are good.

  • Title: Stonewashed Linen Duvet Cover, King, Sage Green
  • Description: Pre-washed French linen that softens with every wash. King size, 230 x 220 cm, with coconut shell buttons. Free returns within 30 days.

Blog posts

Match the title to the question people search, and make the description promise the answer. See Shopify blog SEO.

The home page

Say what the store sells and why it is different. The home page usually ranks for your brand name, so clarity beats keywords.

Finding pages to fix

  • Search Console: in the Performance report, sort pages by impressions and look for high impressions with a low click-through rate. The Search Console dashboard guide explains how to read those numbers. Those titles and descriptions are worth rewriting first.
  • A site audit: finds missing, duplicate and overly long titles and descriptions across every page. zaDojo's site audit does this for Shopify stores, and the main Shopify guide covers the crawler setup.
  • Your CSV export: sort by an empty SEO Description column to see what relies on defaults.

Questions people ask

How long should a Shopify meta description be? Aim for about 150 characters so the important part is not cut off. Shopify's editor shows a character count as you type.

Why is Google showing a different title than the one I set? Google rewrites titles that are too long, stuffed with keywords or do not match the page. Make the title shorter and closer to the page's H1.

Do I need an app to edit meta descriptions? No. The admin and the product CSV export cover it. A bulk editing app only saves time on very large catalogs; Shopify SEO apps covers when one is worth it.
