Shopify SEO apps: which you need, which to skip

Most Shopify stores need two or three SEO apps at most. What each type of app does, when it is worth installing, and the tools that work outside the store.

Most Shopify stores need two or three SEO apps at most, and many need none. Shopify already writes your sitemap, canonical tags and robots.txt, and a current theme outputs basic product structured data. An app is worth installing when it does a job you would otherwise do by hand hundreds of times, such as writing alt text for 2,000 images. It is not worth installing to show you a score.

This guide sorts Shopify SEO apps by the job they do, says when each type earns its place, and covers the tools you use outside the store for research and audits. It is part of the SEO for Shopify guide, and the Shopify SEO checklist shows which checks need no app at all.

Before you install anything

Every app that touches the storefront can add scripts to your theme. That costs speed, and speed is one of the few technical things a Shopify store can get wrong. Ask three questions first:

  • Is the job repetitive? Fixing ten product titles is a ten minute task in the admin. Fixing 3,000 is an app.
  • Does my theme already do it? Check structured data and breadcrumbs before paying for them.
  • What happens when I uninstall it? Some apps leave code in the theme. Note what an app adds so you can remove it later.

App types worth considering

Image compression and alt text

Useful when you have a large catalog or upload photos straight from a camera. These apps compress images and can fill missing alt text from the product title and variant.

  • Worth it if you have hundreds of products, or images over a few hundred kilobytes.
  • Shopify's CDN already resizes images and serves modern formats like WebP to browsers that support them, so the gain is mostly on the original file size and the alt text.
  • Review generated alt text. "Blue mug" on 40 images of different mugs helps nobody.

Bulk editing titles and meta descriptions

The Shopify admin edits one product at a time. A bulk editor (or Shopify's own CSV export and import) lets you rewrite titles and meta descriptions for a whole catalog in a spreadsheet. See the guide to Shopify meta descriptions for what to write.

Structured data

Only worth it if your theme's markup is missing or wrong. Paste a product URL into Google's Rich Results Test first. If you see a valid Product result with price and availability, you do not need an app for it.

If you do install one, remove the theme's version so each page has one Product block, not two.

Reviews

A reviews app is not sold as SEO, but it often matters more than any SEO app. Reviews add unique text to product pages and are the usual source of the star rating in search results. Pick one that renders reviews in the page HTML and marks them up, not one that loads them only after the page finishes.

Redirect managers

Shopify's built-in URL redirects and CSV import cover most stores. A redirect app helps if you are migrating thousands of URLs from another platform or need to find 404s automatically. The Shopify redirects guide covers the built-in way.

App types to skip

  • "SEO score" apps. They check title length and whether a meta description exists. A spreadsheet export shows the same thing, and the score itself does not affect rankings.
  • Speed booster apps that add scripts. An app that injects JavaScript to make the store faster is fighting itself. Speed comes from removing code. See Shopify speed optimization.
  • AMP apps. Google no longer requires AMP for any search feature, and AMP pages add a second version of every product to maintain.
  • Apps that rewrite canonical tags. Shopify's canonicals are correct by default. A second canonical tag on the page is a common way stores break them.

Tools outside the store

Apps live inside Shopify and change the store. Research and audits happen outside it, with tools that look at your store the way Google does:

  • Google Search Console is free and shows which searches you appear for, which pages are indexed and which have errors. Submit your sitemap there.
  • An SEO tool for keyword research and audits finds what your buyers search for, which competitors rank, and what is broken across the whole store.

zaDojo covers the second part. It does keyword research, competitor and backlink lookups, and site audits, and you can use it from the web app or from an AI agent like Claude or ChatGPT through the zaDojo MCP server. For Shopify stores the audit supports Shopify's crawler access signatures, so it is not rate-limited partway through a crawl. The main Shopify guide shows how to set that up. zaDojo costs €10 a month with €10 of usage included.

Questions people ask

Do I need an SEO app for Shopify? No. Shopify and a current theme cover the technical basics. Install an app for a specific, repetitive job.

What is the best SEO app for Shopify? The one that does the job you actually have. For most stores that is a reviews app and, for large catalogs, an image or bulk editing app. There is no single app that improves rankings on its own.

Do SEO apps slow down Shopify? Apps that only work in the admin do not. Apps that add scripts or widgets to the storefront can. Test a product page before and after installing.
