AI Overview optimization: AI Overviews and AI Mode
How Google picks the pages it cites in AI Overviews and AI Mode, what to change on your site, and how to track whether your brand shows up.
To show up in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, you need a page that ranks in normal Google Search for the question and answers it clearly in a few sentences near the top. Both features are built on Google's regular index and ranking systems, so there is no separate trick. What changes is the target: instead of position one, you want to be one of the few pages the summary links to, or a brand it names.
This guide covers how the two features differ, what to change, and how to track your results.
AI Overviews vs AI Mode
- AI Overviews appear above the normal results for some searches. A short written answer, with links to the pages it drew on. Google decides per search whether to show one.
- AI Mode is a separate tab with a chat-style answer. It runs several related searches behind the scenes (Google calls this "query fan-out") and links to pages from all of them. People can ask follow-up questions.
Because of the fan-out, AI Mode can cite pages that rank for related questions, not just the exact one typed. AI Overviews tend to stay closer to the results of the search itself.
What Google says it uses
Google's guidance for site owners is short: the usual Search Essentials apply. A page has to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. There is no special markup, file or schema that gets you into AI features. That also means llms.txt is not a factor here.
What to change
- Rank for the question first. Find the searches that trigger an overview in your market and check where you rank. If you are not on page one, the overview is unlikely to use you.
- Answer in the first paragraph. Put a direct, two or three sentence answer right under the heading that matches the question. Overviews quote and paraphrase short, self-contained passages.
- Cover the follow-ups. For AI Mode, the related questions matter. A page that answers the question and the next two or three people ask (cost, comparisons, how to) has more chances to be picked up.
- Keep facts current. Prices, specs and dates that are out of date get you dropped or quoted wrongly.
- Do not block snippets.
nosnippet,max-snippet:0or adata-nosnippeton the answer keeps that text out of AI features. - Get onto the pages Google already cites. If an overview for "best [category]" links to three review sites that list your competitors and not you, getting onto those lists is often faster than outranking them.
Track whether you show up
Overviews come and go per search and change over time, so one check is not enough. For a quick look at a single search, the free AI Overview checker tells you whether Google shows an overview and which sites it cites. Pick 15 to 30 questions your buyers search, then check them weekly. In zaDojo:
- Create a project and add your brand and competitors to the project context.
- Open Prompt Tracking, paste the questions, and add Google AI Overviews to the engines. ChatGPT and Gemini are selected by default, and you can keep them to compare.
- Pick the country and language, check the cost preview, and choose weekly.
Each scheduled check costs about €0.002 per question per engine. For every search, zaDojo stores the overview text, whether it names your brand or competitors, and the pages it cites. The Citations view splits those into your pages and third-party pages, which tells you where step 6 above should start.
An empty result for AI Overviews usually means Google showed no overview for that search. It is not the same as being left out.
zaDojo tracks AI Overviews. It does not track AI Mode answers today, so for AI Mode check your key questions by hand.
If you use Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or Codex, you can set this up through the zaDojo MCP server: "Track these 20 questions weekly in Google AI Overviews and show me the cost first." Full setup and prices are in the AI visibility docs.
What you cannot measure
- Clicks from AI Overviews on their own. Search Console counts them together with regular web results, with no separate filter.
- How often an overview shows. It depends on the search, the person and the day. Trackers record what Google showed at the time of the check.
- Personalised AI Mode answers. Signed-in users with search history can see different answers.
Questions people ask
Can I opt out of AI Overviews? Only through snippet controls like nosnippet, which also limit how your page appears in normal results. There is no separate switch.
Does schema markup help? Google says no special markup is needed for AI features. Structured data still helps your normal results, and it does no harm. See schema markup for AI for the types worth adding.
Do AI Overviews reduce clicks? For many informational searches, people get the answer without clicking. That is a reason to aim to be the cited source, and to track brand mentions, not only traffic.
