ChatGPT SEO: how to use ChatGPT for SEO work

How to use ChatGPT for SEO, with and without connected data: what it does well alone, how to give it real search numbers, and prompts that work.

By Denis Veisllari

ChatGPT is a strong SEO assistant for writing, reviewing and planning, but on its own it does not know search volumes, rankings or how your pages perform. Any number it gives without looking it up is a guess. Connect it to an SEO data source and it can pull real keyword data, live Google results and your Search Console queries, then reason over them.

This guide is about using ChatGPT as a tool for your SEO. If you want your brand to show up inside ChatGPT's answers, read how to track your brand in ChatGPT instead, and what AEO is for the method behind it. If you work in Claude, the same ideas are in Claude for SEO.

What ChatGPT does well with nothing connected

  • Writing and rewriting: title tags, meta descriptions, intros, FAQ answers, product copy.
  • Reviewing a page you paste in: does the first paragraph answer the question, is the heading order sensible, what does a reader still need?
  • Briefs and outlines: give it a keyword, an audience and the pages that rank, and it drafts a plan you then edit.
  • Explaining technical issues: what a canonical tag does, why a page shows "Crawled, currently not indexed", how hreflang works.
  • Grouping a keyword list you already have: paste your export and ask it to cluster by intent.

What it gets wrong without data

  • Search volume and difficulty. It has no live keyword database. Figures it quotes are invented or out of date.
  • Who ranks today. Results change. Even with web search on, ChatGPT reads a few pages, not the full results page for your country.
  • Your own performance. It cannot see your Search Console clicks, impressions or positions unless you give them to it.

Use plain ChatGPT for the words and the thinking. Get the numbers from a tool.

Two ways to give ChatGPT real data

MethodHow it worksGood for
Paste or upload exportsDownload a CSV from Search Console or a keyword tool and attach itOne-off analysis, no setup
Connect an SEO server over MCPChatGPT calls the tool itself during the chatRepeat work, fresh data, follow-up questions

Uploading a file is fine for a quick look. The limit is that the data stops at whatever you exported, so each follow-up question ("what about the US?", "who ranks for this?") means another trip to the tool.

Connect zaDojo to ChatGPT

zaDojo runs an MCP server that ChatGPT can use as a custom connection, on the Free plan or any paid ChatGPT plan. The short version:

  1. Create a zaDojo account (new accounts get €0.10 of trial credits, no card).
  2. In ChatGPT, add a custom MCP connection with the server URL https://app.zadojo.com/mcp and OAuth sign-in.
  3. Open a new chat and select zaDojo from the tools menu.

The full steps, including the desktop app and Codex, are in the ChatGPT setup docs. Once connected, ChatGPT can look up keyword data, live Google results, backlinks, rankings and your Search Console numbers. On Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces an admin may have turned custom connections off.

A custom connection gives ChatGPT the zaDojo tools but not the skill files that guide longer workflows. You can still ask for an audit or keyword research in plain words.

Prompts that work

With data connected, be specific about the site, the market and what you want back:

  • "Pull my Search Console queries for the last 28 days for example.com. Show pages in positions 5 to 15 with the most impressions, and suggest one change per page."
  • "Find keywords about [topic] in Germany with search volume and difficulty. Group them by intent and tell me which need a new page."
  • "Show the top 10 Google results for [keyword] in the UK. What do the ranking pages cover that my page [URL] does not?"
  • "Run a site audit on example.com and list the issues that affect the most pages first."

Search Console reads through zaDojo use no credits, so the first prompt costs nothing; the Search Console dashboard guide covers the other ways to see that data. Ask ChatGPT to say which numbers came from a tool call. If an answer has a figure with no lookup behind it, ask where it came from.

Costs

Your ChatGPT subscription and zaDojo are billed separately. zaDojo is €10 a month with €10 of usage included, and each data call is charged from your credits. The per-tool prices are in the MCP docs.

Limits worth knowing

  • ChatGPT still writes the conclusions. The data is real; the advice is the model's reading of it. Check recommendations that would change many pages.
  • Long exports can be cut. Very large tables may not fit in one chat. Ask for a filtered slice (one folder, one country, top 100 rows).
  • Model choice matters. Reasoning models are slower but better at multi-step analysis. Fast models are fine for rewriting copy.

Questions people ask

Can ChatGPT do keyword research? It can brainstorm ideas, but it cannot give reliable search volumes without a connected data source. The keyword research guide shows a method that works with free Google tools.

Is content written by ChatGPT bad for SEO? Google's guidance says it judges content on quality and usefulness, not on how it was produced. Pages that add nothing new tend to do poorly whoever wrote them.

Can ChatGPT see my Google Search Console? Not by itself. You can upload an export, or connect a server such as zaDojo that reads Search Console after you grant access.
