SEO agents and SEO automation with AI

An SEO agent is an AI assistant connected to real search data. How agentic SEO works, which tasks to automate, and what it costs.

By Denis Veisllari

An SEO agent is an AI assistant, such as Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or Codex, connected to live search data so it can do SEO work end to end: pull keyword data, check who ranks, read your Search Console numbers, run a site audit and write up what to fix. "Agentic SEO" is the name for working this way. You give the agent a job, it calls the tools it needs, and you review the result.

The piece that makes this possible is MCP (Model Context Protocol), the standard way AI apps call outside tools. Without it, a chatbot guesses search volumes from memory. With an SEO MCP server connected, it looks them up. For a broader map of where AI helps in SEO and where it still fails, see AI for SEO.

"Agentic SEO" also gets used for a second idea: optimising your site for AI agents that search and buy on a user's behalf. That is closer to GEO and AEO. This guide is about the first meaning, doing SEO with agents.

What an SEO agent can do well

  • Research that used to take an afternoon. "Find 50 keywords about bookkeeping for freelancers, check difficulty and who ranks, and group them into pages" is one request.
  • Combine sources. The agent can read your Search Console queries, compare them with competitor rankings and live Google results, and point at pages that are close to page one.
  • Audits with a point of view. A crawler lists 400 issues. An agent can run the crawl, read your analytics, and tell you which five issues sit on pages that matter.
  • Repeatable reports. The same monthly check, run the same way, saved where your team can read it. An SEO report template gives the agent the outline to follow.

What still needs you

  • Judgment about your business. The agent does not know your margins, your sales cycle or which customers you want. Write that down once (zaDojo keeps it in shared project context) and the agent reuses it.
  • Spending decisions. Data costs money. Good setups ask before large batches.
  • Publishing. An agent that drafts pages is useful. One that publishes without review is a risk.

SEO automation: which tasks to automate

SEO automation means handing repeatable tasks to software so they run without you doing each step. Agents widen what can be automated, because they can follow a written procedure instead of a fixed script. A rough split:

TaskAutomate?How
Pulling Search Console and Analytics numbersYesAgent reads them through MCP on request
Monthly or weekly reportsYesA skill that runs the same checks and saves a report
Site audits and broken link checksYesRun the crawl, then let the agent rank issues by traffic
Keyword research and clusteringMostlyAgent gathers and groups; you pick which pages to build
Competitor monitoringMostlyAgent compares rankings and backlinks; you decide the response
Content drafts and briefsPartlyAgent drafts; a person edits and adds first-hand detail
Publishing and technical fixesPartlyAgent prepares the change; a person reviews before it goes live
Strategy and prioritiesNoNeeds your business context and judgment

How to start: pick one task you repeat every month, write down how you do it (or use an existing skill), run it with an agent once while you watch, then reuse it. Set a spending limit so paid data calls stay predictable. For scheduled runs, tools such as Claude Code can run a prompt on a timer; check your client's docs.

What to connect

An SEO agent needs three things:

  1. An AI client that supports MCP. Claude (Claude Code, Claude Desktop, claude.ai), ChatGPT, Cursor, Codex, VS Code with Copilot, Windsurf (now Devin Desktop), Gemini CLI, Zed and others.
  2. An SEO MCP server for the data. Options range from raw data APIs to full platforms. Our comparison of SEO MCP servers covers price and coverage for the main ones. If your team already pays for a suite, Semrush MCP and Ahrefs MCP explain which plans include their servers.
  3. Skills for the workflow. A skill is a written procedure the agent follows, such as "how to do an SEO audit" or "how to cluster keywords". Without skills the agent improvises; with them it follows a tested method. The Claude SEO skills guide lists twelve free ones.

A worked example

You run an online shop selling standing desks and want to know what to fix first. With zaDojo connected to Claude Code:

  1. You run /zadojo:seo-audit and give it your domain.
  2. The agent reads the project context, pulls your Search Console queries (no credits), runs a site audit without Lighthouse (no credits), checks your top competitors' ranking keywords and backlinks (paid, typically €0.10 per domain overview), and looks at live Google results for your main terms.
  3. It saves a short report to the project: three pages close to page one that need better titles and internal links, one category page competitors rank for that you do not have, and a set of broken internal links on product pages that get traffic.

A run like this usually costs well under €1 in data. The report stays in the project, where you and your team can open, print or share it.

How to set up an SEO agent with zaDojo

zaDojo is an SEO and AI visibility platform built to be used through an agent. One MCP server gives the agent more than 80 tools: keyword research, live Google and local results, domain and backlink data, site audits, rank tracking, AI answer tracking in ChatGPT and Gemini, and read-only Google Search Console and Google Analytics. Twelve skills package the common jobs (project setup, SEO audit, keyword research, clustering, competitor analysis, local SEO, link prospecting, AI prompt research, AI visibility audit, reports).

  • Claude Code and Codex: install the plugin, which adds the MCP server and the skills in one step. See the Claude Code plugin or Codex plugin.
  • Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, Gemini CLI and others: connect https://app.zadojo.com/mcp and add the skills. The MCP setup guide has the steps for each client.
  • ChatGPT: add a custom connection; the ChatGPT guide walks through it, and ChatGPT for SEO has prompts that work once it is connected.
  • Not sure which applies? Paste the agent setup prompt into your agent and it picks the right route.

Pricing is one plan at €10 a month with €10 of usage included. New accounts get €0.10 of trial credits with no card. Search Console and Analytics reads, saved reports, project context and plain site audits use no credits. Agents connected to zaDojo are told to ask you before any planned batch over €2.

Questions people ask

Is an SEO agent the same as an AI SEO tool? Not quite. Most "AI SEO tools" are web apps with an AI feature inside. An SEO agent is your own general assistant with SEO tools attached, so it can mix SEO data with anything else it can do: read your code, edit a page, write a brief.

Do I need to code? No. Claude Desktop, claude.ai and ChatGPT connect to MCP servers through settings screens. Developer tools such as Claude Code and Cursor are where agents can also edit your site's files.

Will the agent make up numbers? It can if it has no data source. With an MCP server connected and skills that tell it to cite tool results, it reports what the tools returned. Search volumes and traffic are estimates in every SEO tool; your own Search Console numbers are measured.
